Celebrating Black History Month

Celebrating Black History Month is an important opportunity to recognize the contributions, achievements, and history of African Americans.

Here are 15 goals for anyone looking to honor this month meaningfully:

1. Read a Book by a Black Author: Choose a novel, biography, or a piece of non-fiction from a Black author you've never read before.

2. Watch a Documentary on Black History: There are many insightful documentaries that explore Black history, culture, and experiences. Pick one to watch this month.

3. Support a Black-Owned Business: Make a purchase from a Black-owned business in your community or online.

4. Educate Yourself on a Historical Event: Pick a specific event in Black history to learn about in detail, such as the Civil Rights Movement, Juneteenth, or the Harlem Renaissance.

5. Listen to a Podcast on Black Culture or Issues: Find a podcast that delves into Black culture, history, or current social issues and listen to an episode or two.

6. Share What You Learn: Use your social media platforms to share interesting facts, stories, or quotes about Black history and culture.

7. Attend a Black History Month Event: Many communities host events for Black History Month. Attend a virtual or in-person event.

8. Explore Black Art: Visit a museum virtually or in-person that features artwork by Black artists, or explore online galleries.

9. Cook a Traditional African or African American Dish: Research and prepare a dish that is part of African or African American culinary traditions.

10. Donate to a Cause: Contribute to a charity that supports Black communities, education, or social justice initiatives.

11. Learn About a Black Leader: Choose a Black leader you're not familiar with and learn about their life and contributions.

12. Explore Black Music: Dedicate some time to listening to genres deeply rooted in Black culture, such as jazz, blues, hip-hop, or R&B. Consider exploring different eras.

13. Write a Journal Entry: Reflect on what Black History Month means to you, or how learning about Black history and culture has impacted your views.

14. Engage in Conversations: Talk with friends or family members about the importance of Black History Month and share what you've learned.

15. Create Art: Express yourself through art by creating something inspired by Black history or culture, whether it's writing, painting, drawing, or any other form of artistic expression.

These goals are not only accessible but also enriching, offering everyone an opportunity to engage with and celebrate Black history and culture in meaningful ways.

HAPPY JUNETEENTH

Happy Juneteenth! Today, we pause to reflect on the importance of Juneteenth in our nation's history. Our past has been marked by difficult and oppressive experiences. Juneteenth commemorates the day when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom. The struggle for freedom has been a continuous duty for us since our arrival in this country. Figures like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and many others taught us to persevere in this fight. As we celebrate this day, we must remember our ongoing responsibility to pursue equality and justice.  Juneteenth reminds us of our duty to advocate for the marginalized and champion their cause through faith, hope, and charity. Let's be the change we wish to see in the world. Happy Juneteenth!!  Blessings, MAE
